Standards of Practice – Pharmacist-Ordered Laboratory Tests Published
The CPNL board of directors approved the Standards of Practice for Pharmacist-Ordered Laboratory Tests at their meeting on October 17, 2025. The Standards of Practice have been published on the CPNL website for registered pharmacists to review and to support preparations for integrating the service into practice. Click the link below for more information:
As per the Pharmacy Regulations, 2024, and the Standards of Practice, pharmacists must complete approved education and receive authorization from CPNL before ordering laboratory tests. The education program and the authorization process are under development and expected to be available by January 2026.
Improving Medication Safety Proactively
A key component of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) for pharmacies is the proactive identification of areas of potential risk within a pharmacy’s work processes to improve medication safety.
A Medication Safety Self-Assessment (SSA) is a tool to assist pharmacy professionals to proactively identify potential safety concerns within their pharmacy work processes and identify opportunities for improvement to mitigate risks to patients. Through the medication SSA process, pharmacy staff can systematically reflect on the many steps of medication use processes, set measurable goals for quality improvement, guide improvement activities, and monitor progress of their efforts over time.
A pharmacy-specific SSA is a mandatory requirement for community pharmacies under the CQI and Medication Incident Reporting (MIR) program, MedSTEP NL. A pharmacist-in-charge (PIC) must ensure that a pharmacy-specific medication SSA is completed during the first year of the MedSTEP NL program and as per CPNL’s Standards of Practice for CQI and MIR thereafter. The deadline to complete the first SSA was July 1, 2025.
For a change in a pharmacy’s PIC, the outgoing PIC should share the most recent SSA with the new PIC. Following the change in PIC, a new SSA must be completed by the new PIC within 6 months.
PICs must ensure that a medication SSA has been completed for their pharmacy. If you have not already completed a medication SSA for your pharmacy, please do so as soon as possible.
PICs are reminded to ensure that documentation related to CQI improvement plans and outcomes, developed following completion of an SSA, is retained in the pharmacy and available for audit.
If you have any questions regarding completing a medication SSA or the MedSTEP NL program, please contact the Quality Assurance team at QA@cpnl.ca.

Keeping Contact Information Up to Date
Registered pharmacy professionals are responsible for ensuring that the contact information on their registrant profile, including email address and practice site, is accurate at all times. CPNL primarily uses email communication to send newsletters, renewal reminders, practice site assessment information, professional development audit information, calls for interest for committees, and other alerts. If the email address on file is incorrect, important information may be missed and/or disclosed to the wrong person. If your contact information changes, please update your information on file by logging into the Registrant Portal.
