Preceptoring

A preceptor is a pharmacist or pharmacy technician who assumes responsibility for the activities of their assigned pharmacy intern or pharmacy technician intern during their time in the pharmacy and commits to evaluating their performance during the practical training period. This evaluation is critical to ensuring the competence of future members of the profession. A preceptor should have suitable prior experience and expect to give the position an appropriate amount of attention.

Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who wish to serve as a preceptor for an intern may do so by completing a Preceptor Acceptance Form, which must be submitted by the intern with their Application to Complete Practical Training.

Eligibility

Must be currently registered as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician with the College of Pharmacy of Newfoundland and Labrador (CPNL) with no restrictions on their practice.
Must not be the respondent in an outstanding complaint that has been referred to the disciplinary panel.
Must have been registered and practicing in Newfoundland and Labrador for at least 12 months.
Must have reasonable experience at the proposed practice site to adequately familiarize the intern with systems and patients.
Must have gained or maintained competence in acting as a preceptor by completing appropriate professional development focused on acting as a preceptor, such as:
Dalhousie University Preceptor Education Program
University of Alberta Preceptor Training
University of British Columbia E-Tips for Practice Education Course
University of Western Ontario Preceptor Education Program
Note: If the preceptor training program consists of multiple modules, proof of completion of all modules must be included with the application for authorization.

Practical Training Requirements for Registration as a Pharmacist
Practical Training Requirements for Registration as a Pharmacy Technician

Requirements During Practical Training

The preceptor is responsible for ensuring adequate oversight and supervision is provided to the intern, personally supervising them at least 50% of the intern’s time at the practice site.
The preceptor is responsible for ensuring that the activities in the Practical Training Manual are completed and documented appropriately.
The preceptor recognizes that their appraisal of the intern’s competence to perform the duties and responsibilities of a pharmacist or pharmacy technician plays an important role in CPNL’s determination of their eligibility for registration as a pharmacist or pharmacy technician.
The preceptor is honest, open, candid, and unbiased regarding the intern’s performance during the practical training period and agrees to submit the completed evaluation form to CPNL following the completion of the practical training period, understanding that the intern will not be credited for completing the program until the evaluation has been received.
