Effective Collaboration Between Pharmacy Professionals and 811 Healthline
Effective collaboration between pharmacy professionals and other health professionals is always in the best interests of patients. Ensuring that patients receive accurate information and have a clear understanding of service expectations can help reduce frustration for patients and healthcare professionals, and support timely access to appropriate care.
Recently, a pharmacist contacted CPNL about a concern where, at times, staff at 811 HealthLine (“811”) had referred patients to pharmacists for treatment of symptoms not currently within a pharmacist’s prescribing scope of practice (e.g., ear infections, sinus infections, strep throat). CPNL staff discussed this issue with leadership at Fonemed, the company responsible for 811, and they are committed to ensuring that their staff are notified of the concern and are directed towards accurate resources related to a pharmacist’s prescribing scope in this province.
In addition, Fonemed staff asked CPNL to share a message with pharmacy professionals regarding prescription renewal expectations, on their behalf. In situations where a pharmacist determines that extending a prescription is outside their scope or competency and refers the patient to 811, patients should be advised that prescription renewals through 811 is an appointment-based service and that requests may not be assessed immediately. Setting this expectation for patients and sharing that wait times may vary can help patients make informed decisions about their care options and avoid unnecessary frustration. Although wait times can vary, Fonemed indicated that the current wait for prescription renewal appointments is approximately two weeks.
Drug Scheduling Status of New Epinephrine Nasal Spray
CPNL has recently received questions from pharmacy professionals regarding a new epinephrine nasal spray for emergency use, Neffy. This product is not currently included in the National Drug Schedules and is categorized by Health Canada as an “Ethical” product. This means that while it does not legally require a prescription under federal legislation, there is still an intention that it is used or administered under the supervision of a health professional.
As such, the manufacturers of Neffy have submitted a request for the product to be reviewed by the National Drug Scheduling Advisory Committee (NDSAC) and have requested that it be considered for inclusion in Schedule 2. This request will be considered at the September 2026 meeting of NDSAC and the results of the decision will be posted to the Drug Schedules page of the CPNL website and included in a future issue of The PostScript.
In the meantime, pharmacists-in-charge should ensure that the product is sold only following consultation with a pharmacist.
Does your pharmacy have a continuous quality improvement (cqi) Coordinator?
Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Medication Incident Reporting (MIR) are essential to safe pharmacy practice. In accordance with the CPNL’s Standards of Practice for CQI and MIR, and the requirements of MedSTEP NL, Pharmacists-in-Charge (PICs) are responsible for ensuring these processes are implemented and maintained within their pharmacy.
To support these efforts, PICs are encouraged to designate a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to serve as a CQI Coordinator. While the PIC remains accountable for CQI and MIR activities, a dedicated coordinator can help strengthen quality improvement initiatives and foster a culture of medication safety within the pharmacy.
A CQI Coordinator can help coordinate and advance medication safety and quality improvement initiatives in many ways, including:
Designate a CQI coordinator to champion quality improvement efforts and support CQI and MIR becoming an integral part of your daily practice!
Share Your Feedback with ISMP Canada: NIDR SMART Medication Safety Agenda
In June 2026, ISMP Canada shared the launch of the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-based) Medication Safety Agenda. Learning from incident reports submitted by community pharmacy teams to the National Incident Data Repository (NIDR) supports system improvements for patient safety. This new resource is a direct result of that shared work.
