Update on Pharmacist-Ordered Laboratory Tests Education Program
As noted in the October 2025 issue of The PostScript, Standards of Practice for Pharmacist-Ordered Laboratory Tests have been approved by the CPNL Board of Directors and published on the CPNL website for registered pharmacists to review and to support preparations for integrating the service into practice.
Click the following link for more information: Ordering Laboratory Tests
Work on the development of an education program that meets the requirements of the Standards is nearing completion and is expected to be launched in the coming weeks.
Registered pharmacists will be notified once the program and the associated authorization process are available.
Document Integrity in the Electronic Health Record
Pharmacy professionals play an essential role in the circle of patient care. Factual, consistent, timely, and quality documentation ensures successful patient recordkeeping, enhances the opportunity for collaboration, and supports the principles of patient safety and continuity of care. It is the responsibility of pharmacy professionals to ensure a complete and accurate patient record is maintained, including both the patient’s local and provincial electronic health record (EHR) profiles.
Pharmacy professionals are reminded that the Standards for the Administration of Drug Therapy by Injection or Inhalation require recording both the dispense and the administration of inhalations and injections in the provincial EHR, HEALTHe NL.
If a drug therapy for injection or inhalation is dispensed and administered at your pharmacy, you are required to record both, accordingly, in the Pharmacy Network (or other appropriate regional health authority-approved record), resulting in their inclusion in the EHR. The administration record contains important information that is not contained in the dispense record, such as administration site, dose number, date of next dose, and any adverse reaction information.
Pharmacy professionals should also note that to ensure the completeness of provincial vaccination records, the administration of a vaccine must be recorded in the Pharmacy Network.
Pharmacy professionals are advised to contact the Digital Health division of NL Health Services Service Desk if they have questions about how to properly record the administration of vaccines or other drug therapy for injection or inhalation in the Pharmacy Network.

NAPRA Consultations: Compounding Standards and Competence
The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) is conducting two public consultations related to sterile and non-sterile compounding.
Thank you to all candidates who submitted an expression of interest.
- Consultation on Model Documents for PRA Use – Non-sterile and Sterile Compounding Standards
- In 2024, NAPRA began a review and update of its suite of model documents on standards of practice for pharmacy compounding and is now seeking additional external input on draft documents.
- The goal of the project is to update the documents to better align with the outcome-based approach taken for other NAPRA model documents, update the content based on current evidence-informed references, address any issues/concerns with the current documents, and ensure the documents reflect current and anticipated future pharmacy practice.
- Consultation on Components for PRA Approach to Compounding Competence
- In December 2025, NAPRA communicated the PRA agreed-upon approach to compounding competence to key interested parties and is now consulting on various components that are required to support PARs in implementing the agreed-upon approach to compounding competence, including:
- guidance for education accreditors
- a national list of qualifications/criteria for assessors

Invitation to Participate in Study of Impact of Pride Symbols in Community Pharmacy
Researchers from Dalhousie University and the University of Saskatchewan are conducting a study that aims to explore how Pride symbols (e.g., rainbow flags, pronoun pins, brochures) are perceived and displayed in community pharmacy settings across Canada.
If you are a pharmacy manager or owner in Canada, you are invited to complete a short questionnaire (approximately 10 minutes to complete) to help the researchers understand how these symbols can be meaningfully incorporated into pharmacy environments to foster inclusivity for 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual) individuals.
The findings will help inform future guidance and professional development for pharmacy teams across Canada.
The survey can be accessed here.
Participation is entirely voluntary, and all responses will remain anonymous. This study has received ethics approval from the Dalhousie University Research Ethics Board (File # 2022-6044).
Pharmacists who have questions about the study or who would like more information should contact:
Kyle John Wilby, PhD kyle.wilby@dal.ca (902.880.0040 ) or
Jason Perepelkin, PhD jason.perepelkin@usask.ca (306.966.6992).
